History beats weather at Glacier
Usually "hitting the wall" means experiencing a sudden loss of energy, but at the Glacier High track on Thursday it meant something all together different.
"With the wind, it was just like hitting a wall when I came around that corner," Glacier's Nicole Hall said of the 400 race, which she pushed through and won in 1:03.85.
The weather was less than welcoming at the non-scoring dual meet between Class A Columbia Falls and Class AA Glacier, which was the first ever event held at the school's track.
On the bright side, it was a chance for athletes like Hall to get one last race in before divisionals while making history along the way.
"It's fun that it's the first meet here, so they're all meet records," said Hall, smiling after the 400.
With less than a week before the divisionals, this was a final tune-up and warm-up for both teams.
The state's second fastest 400 relay team, the Wolfpack girls made up of Hall, Maddey Frey, Rachel Cutler and Kayla Smart, won in 51.10.
Frey, who has the fastest 100 time in the state in AA, beat the wind in the 200 and cruised to a victory as well.
"The meet went well even though we had a couple whips with the weather," Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said. "It was a perfect ending to the regular season."
Gusting winds didn't seem to bother the lot, especially near the jumping pits.
Glacier's Ben Cutler won the long jump and qualified for state at the same time.
In the girls long jump, Glacier's Lexy Boschee added another event to her state plans with a qualifying victory. That makes three events the freshman has qualified for state in this season; the high, long and triple jumps.
In the triple jump on the girls side on Thursday, Columbia Falls' Kayla DeWit went leap for leap with Smart and Glacier's Ali Armstrong. DeWit won with one less jump and earned the victory. At the same time, Smart and Armstrong topped the AA qualifying standard.
"I love meets like this," Columbia Falls head coach Jamie Heinz said. "You get great, friendly competition with the AA school and it pushes your kids without it being overly competitive."
As the final event of the day kicked off, the 1600 relay, the rain came pouring down.
But after the race finished, the same teachers, coaches and volunteers that had started setting up early in the morning were still there helping wrap up history.
"If you take a look around and see how far we've come, exactly a year ago, the hurdlers were running on grass," Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said. "So many people have a hand in where we're at today. It's just neat to see."
