Glacier boys leading early in Western AA track
The Daily Inter Lake
MISSOULA - In the words of Glacier boys track coach Arron Deck, "The kids got off the bus and were ready to go."
The Wolfpack boys jumped out to the lead on the first day of the Western AA divisional meet at Missoula County Stadium on Friday.
Shane Freese won the high jump, Taylor Graham placed first in the long jump followed by teammate Ben Cutler, and Glacier came away with 58.5 points through 9 of 17 events.
Helena Capital sits close behind with 49.5 points followed by Helena High at 48. The meet wraps up today and the qualifiers move on to next week's state meet in Kalispell.
"I think the kids might have had a little extra punch today with state being in their hometown," Deck said. "Hopefully we'll finish strong tomorrow."
Flathead junior Jesse Bennett won the 800 (1:59.61), Leif Castren took second in the 3,200 and Duncan Aylor finished second in the 300 hurdles as the Braves currently sit in fourth place with 46 points.
The Glacier girls put themselves in a good position after eight events and currently hold second place with 52 points behind Missoula Big Sky's 62.
The 400 relay team broke the divisional record previously held by Flathead. Nicole Hall, Kayla Smart, Maddey Frey and Rachel Cutler ran a winning-time of 49.23 to break the 2003 mark set by Flathead's Brittany Berger, Cricket Johnson, Molly Burt and Krista Jimenez.
Coincidentally, current Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee was there for both records. Boschee coached the Flathead girls for several years before moving to Glacier.
"It was a great day, a little unorthodox for how we arrived, but overall we're happy," Boschee said.
Glacier junior Kyrsten Pilsch, who is in her first year of track, won the javelin on her sixth and final throw while sister Katie placed fourth in the shot put.
