Wolfpack stumbles in first state softball game

HELENA - Call it a learning experience for Glacier's softball team.
Butte capitalized on five Glacier errors and clubbed 17 hits in an 11-0 victory on Thursday during first-round action at the Class AA state tournament.
Marian Leather and Chelsey Durkin ripped back-to-back home runs in the first inning with two outs to give the Bulldogs a quick lead. Butte scored in all five innings.
The game was called on the 10-run mercy rule.
"We played a very good team," Glacier coach Joel Bemis said.
"The other thing is we helped them out quite a bit. We had five errors. We didn't give ourselves a chance to compete."
Glacier, competing in its first state tournament, had runners on first and second in the first inning, but failed to advance them.
The Wolfpack stranded runners at second and third in the second inning.
"We had a good opportunity there," Bemis said.
"We couldn't hit them in."
Leathers held Glacier to four hits, singles by Zoey Pettit, Lyndsey Hoffenbacker, Sabrina Kenfield and Baylee Quay.
"A difficult way to start (giving up two straight home runs), but I thought the girls were OK at that point," Bemis said.
"They were still playing hard."
Glacier, 11-12 overall, plays C.M. Russell in a loser-out contest today at noon. CMR beat Glacier during the regular season, 6-4.
CMR lost to Missoula Hellgate on Thursday, 7-5.
"I told the girls, want to compete, clean things up, give ourselves a chance," Bemis said.
"Salvage a little pride."
Butte, 16-5, plays Missoula Hellgate at 10 a.m.
