Glacier picks up three AA state track titles

Two state titles in under two minutes.

That was the Glacier Wolfpack way at the Class AA state track meet at Legends Stadium on a sunburst Friday.

In the boys 400, senior Ben Cutler was behind two others until erupting in the final stretch to take the title, the first for the boys track program at Glacier.

"I saw those two guys ahead of me and I just refused to lose," Cutler said. "It was an amazing feeling crossing that finish line."

Right around the same time on the other end of the stadium, freshman Lexy Boschee won the high jump with a clear of 5-foot-6 to unseat three-time state champ Gwen Abbott of Butte.

"I don't know what to say, it's so exciting," said Boschee. "I never imagined (my freshman year) going this way at all."

After winning, Boschee darted to the fence where her father, Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee, had been watching feverishly.

"I was more nervous as a dad than anything else," he said. "As a father, it's hard to stay in one spot and watch the whole thing … it's one of those where you almost want to jump it for her just to get it over with."

Boschee's title was the second for the girls team on Friday. Earlier, the 400 relay team powered its way to first place thanks to four flawless handoffs. Last year, the relay team with three of the same girls, had a mishap during a handoff and failed to qualify.

That wasn't happening this time.

On the final leg, sophomore Rachel Cutler grabbed the baton from junior Maddey Frey and turned towards the finish, arms pumping. Cutler held off the herd in the final straightaway to earn the first track state title in Glacier's history.

"It's amazing. All of our work, four years of work, pays off," said senior relay member Kayla Smart.

"It's really bittersweet for me and Kayla, being our senior year," added fellow member Nicole Hall.

Frey won the 100 trials in 12.83 and Flathead freshman Tess Brenneman came in second with a 13.02.

Brenneman gave everything she had in the 400 race and edged Missoula Big Sky's Ellie Tinkle for second behind Missoula Sentinel's Chantelle Grey. As she crossed the line, Brenneman collapsed, but shortly thereafter got a helping hand from her friendly rival, Grey. The pair have consistently battled this season and went 1-2 at the divisional last week.

Brenneman also took second in the long jump and qualified for the finals in the 200.

After the first day, the Glacier girls sit in fifth place with 22 points, while the Flathead Bravettes are sixth with 17. Butte leads with 45, followed by Billings West, 33, and defending champ Missoula Big Sky, 31.

The Flathead boys totaled 22 points on the first day while Glacier had 19. Billings Senior sits in first with 39, ahead of Billings West, 36, and Billings Skyview, 25.

In the boys 1,600, Flathead juniors Jesse Bennett and Leif Castren placed second and third, respectively.

"I tried my hardest. I got second, but it's my first year so we'll see about it next year," said Bennett, who ran his first mile earlier this season with a time around 4:50.

Both Bennett (4:29.98) and Castren (4:31.26) had personal best times.

"I felt like I did as good as I could," Castren said. "That's maybe the worst I've ever felt after a race but that means I tried my best."

Flathead senior Duncan Aylor took fourth in the 300 hurdles. The Flathead 400 relay team, with Andrew Edsall, George Sherwood, Calvin Athy, Ian Damon, placed fourth also.

Glacier sophomore Shane Freese finished runner-up in the high jump after Billings Senior's Scotty Owens won on his final attempt.
