Cause of outage still a mystery

A power outage centered in southeast Kalispell Saturday afternoon impacted upwards of 4,000 Flathead Electric Cooperative members, communications director Wendy Ostrom Price said Sunday.

Crews went to work and restored power to most in an hour, but in some areas it was closer to two hours. It knocked out traffic lights along the entire southern stretch of U.S. 93 and cut electricity to a wide swath of homes.

The outage, which started about 2:50 p.m., affected service provided through the Green Acres substation, covering most of the south and east side of Kalispell and a couple areas in the west side of town, she said.

The cooperative still was working on the problem Sunday, Ostrom Price said, but had not pinpointed the cause.

Flathead County sheriff's deputies are investigating a burglary at a Hungry Horse huckleberry business, where someone reportedly broke the door between 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday, pulled down a surveillance camera and smashed a jewelry and knife case. It appeared the intruder came through a ceiling vent.

The brother of a 29-year-old man called the sheriff's office after he found his brother dead of an apparent drug overdose at a home they shared on Stag Lane south of Kalispell Sunday afternoon.

The owner of a trailer court on Montana 35 east of Evergreen found a man dead in a shop there Saturday night. No cause was given.

A girl was hurt and taken to the hospital after a group of nine or 10 kids with knives and bats was reported up a hill from Wood Acres Road by Lakeside.

A man was arrested early Sunday for possession of dangerous drugs and partner assault after reportedly kicking his girlfriend in the face early Sunday.

On Empire Loop, a woman reported her fiancé came home, started breaking things, punched her in the face and left.

A vehicle hit a pedestrian and left the scene of an Airport Road casino early Sunday, but later the alleged driver was tracked down and arrested for DUI and no insurance.

Police arrested a man for his second DUI Saturday night after he reportedly nearly hit cars head-on.

After-midnight arrests included a 20-year-old woman for being a minor in possession, a 23-year-old woman for DUI at Fourth and Spokane, a 28-year-old man on Central for a county warrant for disorderly conduct and a 25-year-old man for DUI on Spokane. There also were two fights outside Central Avenue bars that ended in arrests - a 31-year-old man for disorderly conduct and a 26-year-old man for assault.

Officers received 53 calls for assistance between 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Columbia Falls police are investigating a report of a 22-year-old man assaulting his 28-year-old girlfriend in front of a Nucleus Avenue business Saturday night.

Juveniles reportedly threw pumpkins and knocked over mailboxes on Scenic Drive around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Officers received 21 calls for assistance between 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The South Kalispell Fire Department advised a possible fire structure on Willow Glen Saturday night was a controlled burn.

Whitefish ambulance met a man driving on U.S. 93 and took him the rest of the way to North Valley Hospital for treatment of extensive bleeding from his head. They also took a reportedly intoxicated woman found unconscious at a Central Avenue bar to the hospital early Sunday.

Three Rivers EMS took a woman from a bar at the junction of U.S. 2 and Montana 40 to the hospital for treatment of a cut on her face early Sunday.
