Cayuse Prairie School is getting a new gym.

Voters in the rural school district approved a $1.95 million bond request Tuesday. Sixty-one percent of Cayuse Prairie’s registered voters took part in the election, and 496 of them supported the bond issue. Three hundred sixty people voted against it.

The bonds will be sold to build a new, 7,818-square-foot gym and performing arts center, which will be available for community use. Bond money also will be used to build restrooms in the lower elementary grades’ hallway and additional parking around the new gym.

Any leftover money will be used to build classrooms in preparation for future development in the district.

To support the bonds, annual property taxes on a home with a taxable market value of $100,000 will go up by about $54. Taxes on a house with a $200,000 taxable value will go up by about $107 a year.

The district likely will open the project for bid in early 2010 and probably break down at the end of the school year. Construction is expected to take about a year.
