Property taxes due Monday
Monday is the deadline for paying the first installment of Flathead County property taxes.
Taxpayers have until 5 p.m. that day to pay their taxes in person, otherwise tax envelopes must be postmarked no later than Monday, County Treasurer Adele Krantz said.
The second installment for mobile-home taxes also is due Monday.
Property owners who have reviews and appeals still pending with the state Department of Revenue are required to pay their taxes under protest by the Nov. 30 deadline, Krantz noted.
The protest form can be downloaded from the county’s Web site at flathead.mt.gov. Forms also are available at the County Treasurer’s Office.
Payment of taxes under protest sets the designated money aside in a fund until the appeal already in progress has been resolved by the Tax Appeal Board, the Department of Revenue or the courts, Krantz said.
If the decision is in favor of the taxpayer, the Treasurer’s Office will send a refund to the taxpayer.
More than 7,500 Flathead County taxpayers asked for reviews because a statewide reappraisal resulted in exponential property-tax increases, especially for waterfront property.
Krantz said she won’t know until mid-December how much tax money will be held in the protest fund.
