MISSOULA - The Glacier boys soccer team started the AA season off with a 1-0 conference victory on the road against the Sentinel Spartans on Tuesday.

Glacier senior Josh Neiman scored in the first half and Sean Peters, a sophomore making his first varsity start at goalkeeper, made four saves to notch the shutout.

"We started out that first half very well and pressured (Sentinel)," Glacier coach Ryan O'Rourke said. "They came back the second half but we were able to hold them off."

This was the first victory against Sentinel in the three-year history of the boys program.

"We're really excited about that," O'Rourke said.

The Wolfpack returns five starters from last year's 5-6-2 team that lost in the first round of the playoffs to Helena Capital. Neiman led the team in goals last season with six.

Glacier plays crosstown rival Flathead on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Glacier High School.

MISSOULA - The Sentinel girls soccer team spoiled Glacier's season-opener with a shutout victory.

Heather Krebsbach scored the game's lone goal for the Spartans (1-0).

Glacier goalkeeper Patty Hughes made 11 saves in the game, which had 90-degree heat throughout.

"We played hard," said Glacier coach Paul Holmgren, who is in his third year as head coach. "We didn't move the ball quite as well as we had hoped, but we had a lot of good things happening."

Holmgren noted the play of three young players who stepped up for the Wolfpack - sophomores Chantal Gustine and Abretia Crandall, and freshman Anna Jobe.

The Wolfpack returns eight starters from last year's 4-6-2 team, including last year's Western AA player of the year Maddey Frey.

BIGFORK - The late-summer heat appeared to win out in Bigfork on Tuesday as the Vikings tied Stillwater Christian in a nonconference boys soccer game.

"It seemed the heat played a little role in the game," Bigfork coach Keith Koslosky said. "It was a hard-fought battle. The goalkeepers came out on top."

Bigfork keeper Nate Roberson made four saves and Stillwater keeper Josh LaGasssey made two to preserve the shutouts.

"It was scorching out there," Koslosky said.
