Schmaltz medals, Glacier golfers take 1st

GREAT FALLS - Grahm Schmaltz turned in another stellar effort, as did the Glacier boys golf team on Friday to sweep top honors in the Electric City Invitational at Anaconda Hills.

Schmaltz, 68-69-137, was a wire-to-wire winner and finished the 36-hole event with a 3-under total. He matched par on the final day on the Anaconda Hills course.

Schmaltz also helped Glacier pick up another team title, 297-288-585, as the Wolfpack finished well ahead of runner-up Helena Capital, 300-313-613. C.M. Russell, 315-304 - 619, placed third in the six-team field.

The Wolfpack golfers again dominated individual play with four in the top 10. Last week it had five in the top 10, led by medalist Schmaltz, in capturing the team title at the Missoula Invitational by 38 strokes.

Glacier freshman Logan Iverson, 75-71 - 146, tied for third in Great Falls. Teammates Justin Newton, 77-74-151, tied for fifth, while Trey Griffith, 77-75-152, tied for eighth.

Max Applegate led the Flathead contingent, 78-77 - 155, to place 10th overall. The Braves, 322-323 - 645, finished fifth.

C.M. Russell had the top individual team and players in girls action. CMR, 327-307-634, to finish 105 shots ahead of second-place Capital, 371-368-739.

Glacier was third, 379-379-758.

Rachel Solomon, 78-73-151, took medalist honors and was one of five CMR girls to crack the top 10.

Glacier's Elsie Satterfield, 91-87-178, finished sixth; Flathead's Calli Toth, 100-82-182, was eighth; and Glacier' Andrea Spicher, 92-97-189, wound up 10th.

The Flathead girls, 445-385 - 830, were fifth.

Flathead and Glacier will compete in the Flatfish Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The first 18 holes is scheduled for Village Greens Golf Course, 11 a.m., with the final 18 at Buffalo Hill Golf Club, 8 a.m.

The state tournament follows Oct. 8-9 in Billings.
