Youngsters earn total of $237,000 at market stock sale

More than 200 steers, hogs, and lambs were auctioned at the 2010 Northwest Montana Fair’s Market Stock Sale on Saturday, grossing nearly $237,000.

Local 4-H and FFA members sold a total of 36 steers, 124 hogs, and 48 lambs to local businesses and residents, many of whom opted to donate their purchases to area food banks.

This year’s beef sold for an average of $2.36 per pound. Hogs sold for an average of $3.42 per pound and lambs went for an average of $3.89 per pound.

This year’s average prices per pound for all categories were less than 2009 averages.

Beef averaged 64 cents less, lambs $2.31 less and hogs averaged 4 cents less.

Champion animals and their buyers were:

n Champion Market Beef raised by Bailey Brubaker of Kalispell was purchased by Sliter’s Ace for $5,461.25. The animal weighed 1,285 pounds and sold for $4.25 per pound.

n Reserve Champion Market Beef raised by Sawyer Braaten of Kalispell was purchased by Super 1 Foods for $4,553.50. The animal weighed 1,301 pounds and sold for $3.50 per pound.

n Champion Market Hog raised by Alana Townsend of Kalispell was purchased by Les Schwab Tires for $1,350. The hog weighed 270 pounds and sold for $5 per pound.

n Reserve Champion Market Hog raised by Kylee Gibson of Kalispell was purchased by Anderson Masonry for $1,512.50. The hog weighed 275 pounds and sold for $5.50 per pound.

n Champion Market Lamb raised by Greg Wilson of Kalispell was purchased by Western Outdoor/Norm’s News for $1,711. The lamb weighed 118 pounds and sold for $14.50 per pound.

n Reserve Champion Market Lamb raised by Hanna Maxwell of Kalispell was purchased by Kalispell OB/GYN for $952.50. The lamb weighed 127 pounds and sold for $7.50 per pound.
