Braves total 8 champs; Glacier 1

MISSOULA — When it came to the finals of the Western AA seeding tournament on Saturday at Missoula Big Sky High School, Flathead was perfect.

The four-time defending Class AA state champions had eight finalists and all captured seeding tournament titles.

“Going eight-for-eight was really cool,” Flathead coach Matt Owen said.

“From top to bottom, we had a great championship round, something special. It doesn’t happen very often.”

Winning individual titles for the Braves were: Caleb Piasecki (112), Cody Tally (125), Joaquin Calderon (130), Shawn Lau (140), Jeremiah Gaiser (145), Zach Deist (152), Caleb Allen-Schmid (160) and Connor Thomas (285).

Last year at this event, Flathead had 11 finalists and eight champions.

Calderon, Lau and Allen-Schmid repeated as champions.

“Going into state with eight No. 1 seeds will set us really well to make a run at winning that tournament,” Owen said.

“We thought they were capable of doing that from the start,” he said of having eight champions.

“They met our expectations. Going in, I thought all those kids had the potential to do that.”

Flathead had six wrestlers place third: Suny Cheff (112), Jacob Egley (125), Steel Hahn (135), Larry Francis (171), Trevor Beaman (189) and Travis Ozegovich (215).

All total, Flathead will have 22 wrestlers competing at state next weekend in Billings. The top six placers in all weight classes advance.

Flathead qualified 25 for state last year.

Glacier had the honor of advancing the most wrestlers from the seeding tournament — 23, which is a school record. The Wolfpack had one individual champion — Kaleb Mitchell at 98. He won by default in the final over his brother Alek Mitchell. Both are freshmen.

“You don’t want to risk an injury,” Glacier coach Mark Fischer said of the default.

Glacier qualified 22 for state last year.

The Wolfpack had five more runners-up: Lucas Mantel (119), Cooper Sipe (130), Lucas Cummings (153), Logan Clay (171), Boyce Ballard (189).

Taking thirds were Zach Barber (105), Shane St. Onge (140) and Dan Gilbert (285).

“I think we closed the gap on a lot of kids (this weekend),” Fischer said.

“We’ve made it pretty interesting for the last week.”

Ballard lost to the No. 1-ranked AA westler in the state — Jace Prideaux of Sentinel — in three overtimes.

“He had a very good match,” Fischer said.

Fischer said Clay’s win over Francis “was huge for him (Clay).

“Cummings had a big tournament, getting to the finals,” Fischer added. “He was on fire this weekend.”
