Another Glacier High standout is heading down the road to play for the Grizzlies next fall, but this time it’s for soccer.

The University of Montana women’s soccer program officially announced the signing of three-time AA All-State star Maddey Frey and eight other recruits on Wednesday.

Frey grew up in Kalispell playing with the Flathead Force youth club teams and went on to lead Glacier to the state tournament twice in the program’s first three years. The 5-foot-4 forward became the Western AA Player of the Year the past two seasons and in that time accrued 31 goals (19 in her junior year, 12 as a senior). The four-time academic all-stater also won the AA 100-meter-dash in track and field and ran a leg on the state champion 400 relay team as a junior.

“Maddey is a tremendous athlete, having done everything in the game in her Montana prep career,” seventh-year Montana head coach Neil Sedgwick said in a press release. “Her impressive pace allows her to do a lot of things that other players cannot do in competitive situations.”

By choosing to stay in-state and attend Montana, Frey follows her father, who graduated from UM, and classmate Shay Smithwick-Hann, who recently signed to play football for Montana next fall.

Last season the Grizzly women’s soccer team finished 4-13-1 overall and sixth in the Big Sky Conference with roughly six true freshman seeing significant playing time.

Frey joins an incoming class that has players from seven different states with a total of 15 all-state honors.
