The west side of Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road was opened to the Big Bend area Friday afternoon.

Vehicles can now travel 29 miles from the park’s west entrance. The road previously had been gated at Avalanche campground, and it was unclear when the Big Bend opening would occur because of this week’s wet weather. About six of inches of snow fell on the road Thursday from Triple Arches to Logan Pass.

Plows have been working east of the pass on the “Big Drift,” which was 40-to 50-feet deep this year.

Park officials are hoping to have the road open over the pass within the next week.
