Elliot Welder crosses the finish line first in the men's open 5k with a time of 15:30 on Saturday at the Whitefish Lake Run.

WHITEFISH - Wearing a flat-brimmed hat that shaded her face from the glare of the sun, the Queen of the Whitefish Lake Run smiled a white grin.

"I forgot my tiara," she said, feigning disappointment.

It would have to wait till next year. After finishing her 33rd-straight Whitefish Lake Run 5k on Saturday morning, 76-year-old Sally Porcarelli wasn't going anywhere for the time being. Her highness just wanted to rest in the shade and take it all in.

"I love it (here). I just like the whole thing," Porcarelli said as hundreds of runners continued to cross the finish line and mingle around Whitefish City Beach.

"I know so many people here because I've been doing this so long. I remember when I did the first one 30-some years ago, we started downtown and ran to the end of the lake. They called it a 10k, but I think it was a lot longer than that."

Porcarelli hasn't missed the Whitefish Lake Run since it started in 1977, which is how she came to be crowned royalty by race organizers.

"It's stressful (being the queen)," she said with a smile. "No. It's an honor, so now I have to keep coming. It's incentive for me."

On a perfectly clear morning, Porcarelli donned a maroon t-shirt with faded lettering from the sixth annual Run. The former marathon runnerwalked the 3.1 miles among 506 others who came from as far as Florida and as close as down the street.

The annual event is a reunion of sorts, for old teammates, fathers and daughters, and old friends who came to follow the winding path that starts and ends at City Beach.

Flathead High runners new and old filled the races and two former Braves came away with victories in the men's 5k and 10k.

Carl Nystuen, a 2007 Flathead graduate who currently competes at Montana State, won the men's 10k for the second year in a row with a time of 33:02. Current Brave standout Zach Perrin came in third.

Former Braves runner Elliot Welder, a 2005 Flathead grad and recent Princeton graduate, won the men's open 5k with 15:30. Seth Grossman, another former Brave who also competes at Bozeman, came in a close second with 15:48. Columbia Falls High standout Derrick Williams finished third.

Whitefish's Rich Graves won the 5k in the men's masters division. Graves clocked 19:14.

Vonda Garcia of Whitefish, who won the women's open 5k last year, won the women's 10k in 41:22.

In the women's open 5k, two Bigfork runners clipped through first and second. Jessica Johnson won in 19:06 and recent Bigfork High grad Kayla Carlson took second in 20:24. Lisa Perrin of Lakeside won the women's masters race in 23:21.

This year's Whitefish Lake Run drew 331 participants in the 5k and 176 in the 10k.

"It was great," race director Dean Gianos said. "The weather is perfect. It's just a wonderful, wonderful day and it was a great run."
