Fleeing fugitive hides under tarp
A fugitive was found hiding beneath a tarp in a Woodland Avenue yard around 3:45 p.m. Friday.
Jonathan Keys, 33, of Kalispell led authorities on a chase through town and on foot before he was apprehended.
A black Ford driven by the wanted man was spotted by a probation and parole officer, who called Kalispell Police around 3:20 p.m. Friday.
Catching up with the vehicle, Kalispell Police Sgt. Mark Mulcahy turned on his lights, but the truck refused to stop, leading Mulcahy on a 45 mph chase through Kalispell as the truck reportedly drove recklessly and ran stop signs. Not wanting to encourage a dangerous pursuit, Mulcahy turned off his lights after several blocks and followed at a distance, observing Keys turning East on Concord Lane.
Officers found the truck, with Keys’ girlfriend and 6-year-old child still inside, but he had made a run for it.
But soon, a Woodland Avenue resident saw a wet man come into the yard and called police. Keys was located under a tarp and arrested on an outstanding felony warrant.
In an earlier, unrelated pursuit, a girl ran a red light and refused to stop for the officer who attempted to pull her over around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. She led the officer at speeds of 65 mph toward Foys Lake Road before stopping at a Wilson Heights Road residence. She was arrested for eluding, driving without a license, driving without insurance and a headlight violation. The vehicle was towed and is being investigated. The girl reportedly didn’t offer an explanation as to why she didn’t stop and alcohol didn’t appear to have been a factor. She spent a night in juvenile detention and was released to her grandmother Friday.
A young kid on a bike hit a vehicle along First Avenue West, then left Thursday evening.
Seven kids on the bridge near the underpass were acting as if they were planning to jump, according to a report. Officers caught up with the youths around Oregon Lane and warned them to stay off the tracks.
Two men and a woman with a bag were seen going through cars parked along Fourth Avenue West around 4:36 a.m. Friday. Two of the subjects were seen running toward the mall. Around 4:52 a.m., officers located a vehicle on Third Avenue West, unlocked, with its dome light on and items strewn about. The suspicious suspects were not located.
In other auto news, a vehicle parked on Sixth Avenue West was broken into for the second time in two weeks Thursday night. The window was still taped from the last break-in.
Officers are investigating a report of a man and his puppy who were attacked by a brown and white dog along Seventh Street West Friday morning.
Officers received 68 calls for service between 2:30 p.m. Thursday and 2:30 p.m. Friday.
An unknown man has reported screamed several times at a newspaper deliveryman trying to deliver papers in a mobile home park off North Fork Road, the deliveryman told Flathead County Sheriff’s deputies. Around 9 p.m. Thursday night, the screamer was hiding behind a truck, waiting to throw a rock. The matter was referred to the park’s manager.
Seeing chickens killed, a Baldrock Road resident blamed the neighbor’s dogs. However, there were no witnesses.
The woman found passed out around 6:30 a.m. Friday near a hotel on U.S. 93 South apparently had no idea how she got there. She was given a ride to her aunt’s house.
Deputies received 130 calls for service between 3:30 p.m. Thursday and 3:30 p.m. Friday.
After jumping off the roof, two men began beating on the door of a cafe on East Second Street around 5 a.m. Friday. The men, who appeared to have been drinking, told Whitefish Police they were looking for something to eat.
