Columbia Falls' Tiana Burns jumps into the air as she flies toward the pit during the A.R.M Invitational in Whitefish Saturday morning.

WHITEFISH - The on-again, off-again downpour wasn't enough to stop six meet records from being broken or some of the fastest times in the state from being set at the Whitefish High track.

On the team fronts, the Wildcats and Wolfpack were waterproof and appear to be in good shape heading into the final month of the season.

Derrick Williams led a strong group of distance runners that placed high and helped Columbia Falls win first place for boys with 99 points at the 13th annual A.R.M. Invitational track meet on Saturday.

Williams won both the 800 (2:03) and 1,600 (4:38), took third in the 400 and ran anchor on Columbia Falls' runner-up 1,600 relay team.

"It's been a long day, that's for sure," Williams said after the 800 victory.

The Columbia Falls sophomore stuck behind teammate Shawn Whitman until the final half-lap, when Whitman turned up the stride. Williams, who owns one of the fastest 800 times in the state, hung tight and waited until the final 100 meters to power past for the win.

"The first lap we came around pretty slow and when Shawn broke away the only thing I was worried about was sticking with him. I knew he was fast," he said. "That's the strategy, try to stick with the first-place person and beat them in that last 100 ... Now I just keep looking ahead to state."

Out of 16 teams, Glacier was second with 92 points and Thompson Falls was third with 72.

A deep Glacier girls group turned in two individual meet records and tallied 128.5 points to take team honors for the third year in a row.

Polson was second with 111.5 points and Whitefish followed with 80.

"There were some good times and some great performances," Whitefish coach Derek Schulz said. "I was really pleased with our teams and their effort overall was great. The meet turned out to be a really competitive meet which is what we intended."

One of the highlights of the day came early in the afternoon when Cut Bank's Deni Fitzpatrick broke her own meet record in the 100 with a time that would be a state record if it happened at the final meet. The Cut Bank sprinter clocked 12.20 hand time in a competitive race that had a rare break in curmudgeonly weather.

The Class B state record is 12.3 set by Paula Good of Fort Benton in 1983 and the all-class record is 12.24, set in 1998 by Stacey Rehbein of Sidney.

Fitzpatrick impressed again in the 200, where she broke Courtney Ferda's five-year-old meet record. Fitzpatrick ran 25.76, which is currently tops in the state for all classes.

Maddey Frey finished second in the 100 and 200 and set a meet record in the long jump with 17-10 3/4. The mark surpassed last year's record set by teammate Rachel Cutler (16-8 1/2).

Glacier sophomore Lexy Boschee broke the seven-year-old meet record in the girls high jump with a clear of 5-5. The previous record of 5-4 was held by Columbia Falls' Sarah Hislop.

Glacier also had a top finish from Katie Pilsch, who won the discus (125-0).

Whitefish senior Anto Daoud continues to dominate in his final season and broke a meet record in the 400. Daoud ran 50.16 and took down the previous record of 50.48 set by Whitefish's Cody Henning in 2004. Daoud also won the 200 (22.45) and ran legs on both Bulldogs' winning relay teams.

"It's actually not that bad of a running day, it was a little sprinkly but whatever, it's good running weather," he said after winning the 400.

Glacier's Troy Fraley would beg to differ.

Just as the boys 3,200 race lined up in the second to last event, another storm settled in just overhead and poared down on the meet and its surviving attendants. Fraley, who had been battling illness heading into Saturday, managed to brave horizontal rain for two miles and won in 10:24.

"It was pretty rainy and a little colder than what I'm used to," he said. "It was hard those last couple laps because I didn't know how fast I was going."

Bigfork's Kayla Carlson motored through the girls 3,200 in record-setting fashion. The senior clocked 11:38, breaking Whitefish alum Lauren Kuennen's 2008 record by eight seconds.

Bigfork's Keenan Evans won the boys 100 in 10.82.

The Polson girls, a strong title contender in Class A again this season, tallied seven first-place finishes. Breanne Kelley won both the 100 hurdles (15.89) and 300 hurdles (48.86) and ran on the winning 1,600 relay team (4:14.16) along with Katie Finley, Christa Red Crow and Nicole Davey. Davey won the 400 (59.78) and tied the meet record in the pole vault (10-0). Loni Havlovick won the shot put (34-11 1/2) and took second in the discus, and Mesa Starkey won the 1,600 (5:36).

Whitefish's Carly Schwickert won the 800 (2:29).

Derek Crittendon of Whitefish won the 110 hurdles (15.46). Libby's Kody Berget won the 300 hurdles (40.38). Trent Thompson of Plains won both the shot put (49-7) and the discus (165-7) while teammate Taylor Firestone won the triple jump (42-6).

Thompson Falls' Charlie Knapp won the long jump (20-2) and teammate Will Dalby threw the javelin 182-9 for the win.

Polson's Ty Fouty won the pole vault (12-6). Glacier's Shane Freese won the high jump (6-0).

Rounding out the girls results, Whitefish's Shelby Backer won the javelin (108-4), Sammy Evans of Havre won the triple jump (34-1/2) and Cut Bank won the 400 relay (50.65).

This year's meet drew 663 varsity and junior varsity competitors.
