Tradition lives on at Archie Roe

In 36 years, Lew Savik has only missed one Archie Roe track meet.

Even as rain poured down in the final hour of a long Saturday, there was nowhere else he would have rather been than at the finish line helping runners as they piled through.

For the 69-year-old Kalispell resident, it'll take more than lousy weather to spoil one of the state's mainstay track meets.

"I want to be here. Archie Roe is one of the greatest track meets there is," said Savik, a longtime meet helper. "Track's a great sport, and here you get to see the very best in Western Montana."

Along with a loyal group of volunteers, Lew and the steadfast fans who braved the elements at Legends Stadium were not disappointed as Kalispell's strong track tradition was put on display.

The Flathead boys, led by a dueling distance duo, took first place as a team with 79.5 points, and the Glacier girls piled up 106 points for their own first-place finish at the 36th annual track and field invite. Out of roughly 16 schools competing, Missoula Big Sky was second in girls varsity with 97.5 and Flathead was third with 65. For boys, Glacier was runner-up with 59 points and Missoula Big Sky was third with 55.

After 10 plus hours and more than a combined 100 freshman, junior varsity and varsity races on the track, Savik pointed out two that he thought were most memorable - the varsity boys 1,600 and 3,200.

As it has gone so often before, a pair of orange and black Braves jerseys were out front battling. Flathead freshman Zach Perrin and senior Leif Castren went step for step in both long distance races and after a combined 12 laps - three total miles - the freshman was barely nine-tenths of a second faster total. Perrin leaned in at 4:32.22 in the 1,600 while Castren finished at 4:32.38. In the 3,200, Perrin did it again as he skirted through the finish line at 9:46.07 to Castren's 9:46.80 fully automated time.

"I like the way our distance runners ran today," Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said of his distance tandem, who combined for 36 points.

Two meet records were broken on Saturday.

Flathead sophomore Tess Brenneman inched closer to former Bravette star Lexie (Miller) Beck's 31-year-old state record in the long jump. Brenneman leaped 18-feet-7-inches, which won easily and gave her the state's best all-class jump by almost seven inches. Beck, who became a coach at Flathead this spring, jumped 18-11 1/4 at state in 1979. Brenneman's leap broke a 1989 meet record set by Columbia Falls' Tanya Tesar (17-9).

Brenneman also won the 400 and took third in the 100 and high jump and was the come-from-behind anchor for Flathead's 1,600 relay team in a tightly contested final race.

Missoula Big Sky's Drew Owens broke Jamison Banna of Flathead's 1988 record in the 300 hurdles. Owens ran 38.91, topping Banna's 39.00 time.

The well-rounded Glacier girls were led by high jump and triple jump winner Lexy Boschee, pole vault winner Stacey Pitt and 800 winner Heather Fraley. The Wolfpack had 18 placers on Saturday and head into the final weeks of the season with newfound confidence.

"Overall I'm ecstatic about how the team did," Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said. "It's taken a long time for everybody to believe that we have a chance to place high at divisionals and state. I think the girls are starting to figure it out."

Cut Bank's Deni Fitzpatrick nearly broke two long-standing meet records on her way to winning three events.

The junior standout won the 100, 200 and 100 hurdles and was less than two-tenths of a second away from topping records in both sprints.

Glacier's Maddey Frey, the fastest AA sprinter around, finished runner-up in both sprints behind Fitzpatrick.

"There was good competition here today so that pushed me a lot," Fitzpatrick said. "(Frey and Brenneman) are good, they help me. I like competition."

In another photo finish, this time in the boys 800, Columbia Falls' Derrick Williams and Patric Jessat and defending AA state champ Jesse Bennett entered into a nothing-left-behind chase to the finish in the final 150. Bennett stepped into the wide lane on the final curve of the race and went from sixth place to tied for first alongside Jessat and Williams. But Williams held on, barely, as the three runners crashed through the finish line with Williams' blue jersey first by a thread. Jessat came in four-tenths behind Williams and Bennett was back nine-tenths.

Bigfork's Kayla Carlson, who has ran some of the state's fastest distance times all season, won both the girls 1,600 and 3,200. Similarly successful this spring in the throwing events, Loni Havlovick turned in the best shot put and discus at Archie Roe for fourth-place Polson.

Whitefish's Anto Daoud won both the boys 200 and 400 and was fifth in the 100 and the Bulldogs came in a close fourth-place with 54 points. Whitefish also swept the boys relays. Glacier's Kyle Montini won the triple jump. Bigfork's Keenan Evans cruised through the 100 with a victory.
