Carlson, relay place first for Bigfork track

MISSOULA - By the slimmest of margins, the Bigfork girls are the ones out front so far.

Kayla Carlson won the 1,600 and the Vals' short relay team eked out a victory to carry Bigfork to 34 points after seven events for a day-one lead at the Western B divisional track meet on Friday.

The Vals relay team, with Mallery Knoll, Jen Egdorf, Quinci Paine and Caitlin Charlebois, edged Superior's squad by less than a second and that ended up being the difference in the team scores. Superior sits in second place with 33 points and Eureka, led by 400 winner Bailey Malecha, is in third place.

The Darby boys hold first with 55 points, Thompson Falls is next with 53 and Missoula Loyola is third with 35 points.

The Bigfork boys won the short relay with Keenan Evans, Travis Knoll, Ian Lorang and Derek Minemyer. The Vikings are in seventh place with 12 points and Eureka follows with nine.

Other winners for girls were Loyola's Kiernan Haggarty (javelin), Florence's Megan Leathers (discus), Thompson Falls' Hope Reid (high jump) and Sarah Jakober (triple jump).

Winning on the boys side was Thompson Falls' Charlie Knapp (400 and triple jump), Darby's Doug Raymer (800) and Seth Garbett (3,200), Loyola's Brandan Haggarty (javelin), Deer Lodge's Brandon Forson (discus) and Plains' Dillon Fryxell (high jump).
