Near 'perfect day' for Pack in track

HELENA - Glacier girls track coach Jerry Boschee couldn't have hoped for much more on the first day of the Western AA divisional.

"We had pretty close to a perfect day," he said after the Wolfpack scored 56 1/2 points to take a first-day lead.

The Wolfpack holds a slim 4-1/2-point advantage heading into today's final events. Helena High is second with 52 points and Missoula Big Sky has 36. Flathead is fifth with 25 points.

"We feel pretty good with where we are," Boschee said. "We had a team meeting and talked about everyone finishing what they started. They all have high expectations for themselves."

The Flathead boys are currently in second place with 54 1/2 points and Glacier is third with 51. Helena Capital leads with 72.

Defending state champion Jesse Bennett of Flathead qualified for state the old fashioned way by winning the boys 800. Teammate Alec Surynt was runner-up. Flathead's Zach Perrin won the 3,200 with teammate Leif Castren finishing on his heels for second.

Glacier's Shane Freese, the defending divisional champ in the high jump, nearly matched the divisional record of 7-0 and cleared 6-10 for the win. Freese also placed fifth in the long jump.

Flathead's Tess Brenneman won the long jump and came in first in the 200 trials and third in the 100 trials.

Glacier's Maddey Frey came in second in both the long jump and the 100 trials and finished third in the 200 trials. Teammates Heather Fraley and Anna Deleray took second and third in the girls 800, respectively. Stacey Pitt was runner-up in the pole vault, Lexy Boschee finished fourth in both the long jump and 100 hurdle trials and Katie Pilsch was third in the shot put. Kayla Byle qualified with fifth place in the 300 hurdles. Glacier's short relay team finished second.

Glacier's Taylor Hart placed second in the boys 300 hurdles and Kyle Griffith was second in the long jump while Kyle Montini tied for third.

Flathead's Karl Ingram finished second in the javelin, Conner Thomas placed third in the shot put, Mike Van Arendonk tied for fifth in the high jump and Dominic Eickert placed fifth in the pole vault.

For the Flathead girls, Kwyn Johnson and Annie Cronk took third and fourth in the 300 hurdles, respectively.

Competition wraps up today. The top five placers move on to the state meet in Great Falls next week.
