Class A State Track: Dogs' Daoud state 400 champ

LAUREL - Whitefish senior Anto Daoud won his first individual state championship while the Columbia Falls boys are hoping to achieve a similar accolade on the team front.

Daoud edged runner-up Patric Jessat of Columbia Falls with 49.53 to win the boys 400 while the Wildcats as a whole stepped into second place on the opening day of the Class A state track meet on Friday.

Columbia Falls totaled 27 points and heads into today's conclusion chasing first-place Corvallis, which scored 44 points in eight events.

On the girls side, Lewistown leads with 28 points but there's three teams, including Polson, within eight points. The Pirates scored 20.

Columbia Falls' Derrick Williams placed second in the 800 in a photo-finish. Lewistown's Caleb Bentley came in at 1:58.62 with Williams clocking 1:58.79.

Teammate Jacob Hader finished second in the 300 hurdles. Kodiak Gimbel took fifth in the high jump and Shawn Whitman placed sixth in the 3,200.

Polson's Loni Havlovick was a runner-up in the girls shot put while Natasha Lafferty was fourth. Nicole Davey finished third in the 400 and Mesa Starkey placed fifth in the 1,600.

For the Polson boys, Colter Bull placed fourth in the 800.

Libby's Kody Berget placed third in the 300 hurdles and teammate Tyler Troy took fourth in the long jump. For girls, Chancey Auge placed fifth in the high jump.

Whitefish's Carly Schwickert took sixth in the 1,600 and Olivia Nagler came in sixth in the javelin.
