Flathead, Glacier trail Bozeman at meet

Bozeman High School proved a tough team to beat at a Class AA speech and debate match-up in Helena this weekend.

Bozeman, the defending state champion, held off Flathead and Glacier high schools at the Helena Invitational. The Hawks finished the weekend with 239 points, followed by second-place Flathead’s 164 points and third-place Glacier’s 118.5 points.

“Bozeman had an impressive weekend,” Glacier head coach Greg Adkins said. “We had a good first tournament, but our inexperience really hurt us on Saturday afternoon.”

Flathead head coach Karen Downes was pleased with her team’s performance.

“The Helena tournament went really well for us,” she said. “Actually, the only way it could have [gone] better is if Bozeman did not sweep nearly all of the debate events.”

Glacier landed a debate victory in Public Forum, preventing Bozeman from completely dominating the weekend’s debate events. The Wolfpack also had a first-place finish in Expository Speaking.

Flathead finished first in three individual events: Impromptu Speaking, Memorized Public Address and Humorous Oral Interpretation.
