Welcome to new commissioner

A new day is dawning for the Flathead County Board of Commissioners. Voters overwhelmingly picked Republican Pam Holmquist to replace incumbent Democrat Joe Brenneman, and she’ll take her place at the commissioners’ table on Jan. 3.

We welcome Holmquist to her new challenge and thank Brenneman, one of the hardest-working commissioners in recent memory, for his many contributions during his six-year term. Both ran diligent, respectable campaigns, and that in itself was a breath of fresh air in this political climate.

Holmquist brings a quintessential Montana woman persona to the commission. She’s a hard-working small businesswoman who puts family first. She hunts and fishes, and enjoys and respects all of the outdoor amenities the Flathead offers.

Holmquist has promised to take a conservative approach to running the county, with an eye on keeping the budget trimmed and property rights protected. Being a commissioner requires a working knowledge of all kinds of county issues and how they often dovetail into state and federal programs. We trust she’ll do the homework it will take to do the job justice.

FOR DEL MOORE, the old adage “better late than never” comes to mind. The 85-year-old veteran last week was presented with nine medals he earned in battles stretching from Europe to the Pacific during World War II. The medals range from the Bronze Star to a World War II Victory Medal. Sen. Jon Tester helped Moore get the recognition he deserved and presented the medals last weekend.

Thanks, Mr. Moore, and all veterans who have put their lives on the line for our freedom. Veterans Day is next Thursday. Take the time to attend one of the local assemblies planned to honor those who have served their country.
