Asbestos fear shuts down park offices
Concerns about potential asbestos contamination prompted a closure of Glacier National Park headquarters and a relocation of employees to other buildings Thursday.
The possible asbestos problem was discovered while a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system was being installed in the West Glacier headquarters building, which was constructed in the 1960s.
“At this time, we do not have confirmation that asbestos is present but we are acting on the possibility that some of the building materials may contain asbestos,” a Friday park press release states.
“Testing is under way and the building will remain closed to entry until it is shown that is safe to return.”
Employees were relocated to other offices in the park headquarters area.
Visitors can still get information at the Apgar Visitor Center, which now is open seven days a week rather than only on weekends.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. The visitor center will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.
