WHS girls state champs

HELENA - Bailey Eaton could see the finish line. She could see her and her Whitefish teammates holding up a fourth state championship trophy. She could see her final race being one to remember.

And then she felt faint and collapsed.

Eaton climbed to her feet three separate times before falling back over as runners sped past and the crowd of fans lined up along the downhill finish at Bill Roberts Golf Course on Saturday began cheering support.

But her legs wouldn't let her get back up a third time, and the all-state runner crawled through the finish line in front of emotional onlookers and teammates.

A year after finishing sixth place at the state meet in Missoula, Eaton crumpled over in the cold grass, 43rd place, and lay there silent.

It wasn't until almost 15 minutes later, when she was still barely able to stand up, that Eaton found out her crawling finish had won Whitefish its fourth girls cross country state championship in a row.

"It was the race of our lives, I guess," Eaton, who is the lone team member to have run on all four state title squads, said later in the afternoon. "Fourth state title, we're all really proud of that."

Led by five talented seniors, Whitefish did it again, this time in unforgettable fashion.

The Lady Bulldogs won by a slim eight points, totaling 78 to Fergus' 86.  Jessica Sagen placed fifth, Carly Schwickert came in sixth, Stella Holt was 11th and Jackie Cassidy was 13th.

And then there was Eaton, who had been Whitefish's top runner and in ninth place for 2 1/2 miles on Saturday.

"I just started fainting," Eaton said. "I was feeling strong the whole race and looking forward to finishing strong."

After Eaton collapsed, "I was just thinking that I had to let the least amount of girls pass me before the line. I saw my teammates that had finished cheering for me as I was coming down. And I couldn't let them down."

"It was amazing," Whitefish coach Sara Brist said. "We're just standing there yelling ‘Get up Bailey, get up!'"

"All I could think was that I needed to get to her," Eaton's mother Maraika said. "She just kept running and I thought she's going to collapse again, but she finished. That's just the way she is. But it was really tough as a parent to watch that."

"Wow. Let's face it, cross country is a complete team sport, no doubt about it," Whitefish coach Bill Brist said. "The number one (runner) is as important as number two, three, four and obviously today, number five. We maybe won the race by having so many up front but until Bailey crawls across the line, the deal wasn't sealed ... I know that if she doesn't cross that finish line, we're not going to win. There's no way. If she just crosses, we at least have a shot."

Northwestern A had eight runners place in the top 13 of the Class A girls race. Polson's Claudia Hewston was edged out of first place in a photo finish and ended up third. Mesa Starkey finished eighth, Tegan Bauer was 10th and Polson earned fifth place as a team. Columbia Falls' Jinise Osborne placed ninth and the Wildkats finished eighth as a team.

The celebrating didn't end for Whitefish after the girls race. In the Class A boys race, the Bulldogs put two runners in the top 15 and earned the team's best finish in school history with second place.

Nathan Knox finished 12th, Fischer Gangemi followed in 13th and Whitefish tallied 124 points to edge Belgrade by one point for the runner-up spot. Corvallis won with 81 points and was led by first-place finisher senior Chris Jessop.

"Second this year is outstanding," Bill Brist said. "Coming into the season I don't think anyone was even expecting us to be close to a trophy, so to come away with the highest finish for any of our teams ever not only gives us that trophy but also sets the sights for next year's team. We've got a lot of young kids that are excited for running."

Columbia Falls' Derrick Williams earned second place in an impressive performance for the second-year runner. Williams, a junior, held on after a fast first mile and held off a diving Tucker White of Billings Central at the finish line. Columbia Falls took fifth as a team.

In the AA races, Flathead's Zach Perrin fell off the lead pack in the final mile and ended up seventh. Flathead finished with 187 points for seventh place. The Bravettes took seventh as well and Paige Bouma came away with all-state honors. The junior placed 14th. Glacier's girls came in eighth and the Wolfpack boys were 11th. Heather Fraley was the top Wolfpack girl at 23rd and younger brother Troy was tops for the boys at 21st.

The Bozeman squads easily repeated. Freshman Caroline Hardin won the girls race in 17:30 and the Hawks totaled 46 points. For boys, Missoula Sentinel's Jacob Turner was the individual winner and the Spartans came in second. Bozeman won with 78 points.

The Missoula Loyola boys claimed their eighth Class B title in 11 years in the closest team contest on the day. Both Loyola and Manhatten were tied with 103 points after the top five runners on both teams were scored. The deciding factor came down to the sixth runner, which fell in favor of Loyola.
