Lewis D. Card passed away on March 30, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, love of family and friends, wit and his love of people and life.

Lewis was born in Havre in 1929 to Lewis V. and Dorothy Daum Card. He spent his happy childhood in Havre, Fortine and Whitefish. He volunteered for the Army in 1948 and was posted to Fort Monmouth, N.J., where he met the love of his life, Rose, on the boardwalk in Asbury Park. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952, at which time he and Rose married.

Lewis and Rose raised their family in Columbia Falls where he worked for the Anaconda Aluminum Company, becoming its Industrial Relations Manager. Later he and Rose lived in Henderson and Louisville, Ky. and Mandeville, Jamaica. They then returned to Whitefish, which he always considered home, where he and Rose spent the remaining years of his life.

Lewis was an avid outdoorsman, a love he engrained in his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed backpacking in the mountains of Glacier Park and fishing and hunting in Montana's lakes and rivers with his family and friends.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Rose; his children and their spouses, Lewis and Julie Card, Linda Lynn and Jeff Stevenson, and William and Klara Card; and his brothers and their families, John and Fran Card and Phil and Janet Card. He loved his grandchildren Lewis, Tess, Andrew, Kyle and Alex and passed on to them his zest for life.

Lewis was devoted to his family and loyal to his friends. He lived his life to its fullest, as he poignantly illustrated in the last words he wrote to his family: "It was a awesome wonderful journey beyond my dreams."

Friends and family are invited to attend his graveside service at the Whitefish Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 4. Afterwards, those attending are invited to his home for "a simple celebration of my life."

In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the American Heart Association.
