Northwest Fuel Systems owner Burl French hoisted a large American flag above his south Kalispell business in the days following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Almost 10 years later, the symbol of hope and American solidarity was stolen right off its pole.

French said the approximately 6-foot by 15-foot flag was taken sometime Monday evening.

All that’s left is a cut rope used to hoist it up the 30-foot pole. The display, which included lighting, cost about $600, French said.

But that’s not what bothers him.

“Somebody just cut the flag down and stole it,” he said. “I’m absolutely embarrassed for us as Americans.”

French had not reported the theft to the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office as of Wednesday, but says he is prepared to offer a reward of $100 for information leading to its return.

“We’ll replace it either way,” he said.

French can be reached at 755-4343.

His business is located at 1125 Industrial Court along U.S. 93 south of Kalispell.
