Fire destroys trailer, car near Whitefish

A fifth-wheel trailer and a nearby car were destroyed by fire Wednesday south of Whitefish.
Firefighters responded to the fire at 655 Blanchard Lake Road at about noon and had the fire under control a short time later.
The residents of the fifth wheel and a nearby trailer were not at home at the time of the fire, Whitefish Fire Chief Tom Kennelly said.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, he said, adding that it appears to have started in the trailer.
It was initially reported that ammunition inside the fifth-wheel was exploding during the fire, but Kennelly said the noise likely was the result of bursting aerosol canisters.
“We didn’t find any ammunition,” Kennelly said.
In addition to the Whitefish Fire Department, firefighters from West Valley, Columbia Falls, Evergreen and Kalispell responded to the fire.
