Platke finishes with a 67; wins Flatfish Invitational
WHITEFISH - There were no bogeys, just plenty of pars to go with four birdies - two on both nines - for Whitefish's Reed Platke on the final day of the Flatfish Invitational at Whitefish Lake Golf Club on Tuesday.
The senior fired a 5-under 67 to easily nail down medalist honors on the South Course. He finished seven shots ahead of Eli Rogers of Hamilton and Ryan Porch of Glacier.
Porch shot 72 on the final day and Rogers 73.
"One shot off the South Course record for junior players," Whitefish coach Terry Nelson said of Platke's 67.
"He had a chance (to tie or break it) with good birdie chances on the last three holes, but nothing would fall."
Platke shot 33 on the front and 34 on the back for his lowest 18-hole round in prep tournament play. His previous best was a 68.
"I couldn't be happier or prouder of his performance in his final home course tournament of his high school career," Nelson said of his standout.
"He has been a steady performer at Whitefish."
Platke shared the Flatfish lead with Glacier's Andy Boyer after 18 holes on Monday at Indian Springs Ranch Golf Club in Eureka. Both shot 75.
"I'm hitting the ball really well," Platke said.
"Putting really well. That helps."
Platke scrambled to save par on the challenging par 5 sixth hole. His tee shot on the 470-yard hole found the water.
"My third shot was within 15 feet (of the cup)," he said.
"I made that for birdie."
Platke won this tournament for a second-straight year. Last year he needed a birdie putt on the final hole for a 1-shot victory.
Platke was also the medalist at the Missoula Invitational this month and finished third at the Great Falls Invitational, five shots off the pace.
The team titles in the Flatfish went to Glacier.
The Glacier boys shot 617 to end up four strokes ahead of runner-up Whitefish.
Glacier's Logan Iverson finished fifth, 78-75-153, and Boyer tied for seventh, 75-80-155.
Whitefish's Camp Kenyon, 76-78-154, was sixth and Arthur Dorn, 78-79-157, tied for 10th along with Flathead's Michael Lavin, 82-75-157.
The Glacier girls picked up their second invitational title of the fall season and had three finish in the top 10, led by runner-up Shelby Ballard. All five Wolfpack girls shot under 100 both days.
Glacier finished with a 732 total, 15 shots better than second place Helena. Polson finished third, 758.
Ballard, who held the first-day lead with an 81, had another solid round with an 11-over 83 at Big Mountain Golf Club. Mari Wolverton of Missoula Sentinel, however, shot a 78 to finish at 161 and three shots ahead of Ballard.
Wolverton carded an 83 on Monday at Whitefish Lake Golf Club on the South Course.
Joining Ballard in the top 10 for Glacier were Kaydee Aurich, 96-91-187, who was ninth; and Hannah Davis, 93-95-188, tied for 10th.
Whitefish's Erin Tabish, 95-90-185, tied for seventh.
