Glacier boys second at FHS Invitational

The Glacier boys swimming team placed second at the Flathead Invite Friday at The Summit in Kalispell, matching its finish at the same event a year ago.
Senior Jacob Williams took first in the 200 and 500 freestyles. He was also a member of Glacier's 200 medley relay team which finished in first as well. His teammates in the medley were John Ahles, Alex Augusta and Logan Streit. The same four swimmers also took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
"(Williams) has one speed, and it's fast,"said Brandon Rannebarger, who coaches both Flathead and Glacier swim teams. "He's phenomenal right now. He caught fire this meet."
His was not the only standout performance on a day when the Glacier girls finished in fourth and Flathead claimed seventh place in both the boys and girls competition.
CMR took the overall girls title with a score of 329. Great Falls won on the boys' side with a 209.
William's Glacier teammate Streit took home victories in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. In the 50, he finished with a time of 23.1 seconds, besting the second-place finisher by 1.7 seconds.
"He looks really good," Rannebarger said. "Just had a great tempo."
The Glacier girls were paced by Maxie Scroggs, who finished first in the 100 fly, as well as Makenna Siebenal, winner of the 100 freestyle.
Scroggs and Siebenal also placed first and second in the 100 backstroke.
Maddie Walters placed third in the 500 freestyle.
The team of Walters, Sara Burch, Jenna Kintzler and Siebenal earned first place in the 200 freestyle relay, beating out second-place CMR by nearly seven seconds.
"The girls just handled their business," Rannebarger said.
For Flathead, Ben Mason led the way, placing first in the 100 fly and second in the 100 backstroke. Teammate Michael Scaccia placed second in the 100 freestyle just behind Glacier's Streit.
And while there were no top finishers for the Flathead girls, Rannebarger said the team is improving.
"I think in the end, the speed will be there," he said.
