POLSON - Saturday was a pretty good day for the local wrestling teams.

Three teams placed in the top five at the annual Polson Tournament. The Glacier Wolfpack scored 221.5 points to claim the title, followed by Corvallis, 171.5, Sentinel 156.5, Flathead, 143.5 and Polson, 95.5.

The Wolfpack had 12 placers - four champions, four second place finishers and four third place finishers.

Glacier champions were Quin Barber (98), Alek Mitchell (125), Zach Barber (135), and Mac Sutherland (275).

Flathead had eight placers, including champions Jacob Egley (152) and Larry Francis (171).

Carlos Quinones won the 112-pound weight class for the Pirates.

"It was kind of a nice little tournament to start off the year, get tuned up and see where we are at," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.

"I am really proud of these kids for their effort and the heart they showed," he said.

"It's a tough little tournament. A lot of those smaller towns, they produce a lot of tough kids.

"I think our kids went out with a lot of heart. Some kids wrestled really well. We know we have some things we have to work on, but it's early and that's what makes it fun," Fischer said.

Flathead's Matt Owen was also pleased with his team.

"We did awesome, really well," he said.

"(The Braves) rolled it over, right where they left off against Butte (on Friday).

"Overall, I thought from top to bottom, every one of our kids went out and wrestled to win. We showed a lot of heart on the mat," he said.

The Braves brought 13 wrestlers to Polson, so Owen was happy to see eight of them placed.

"We have a little bit younger team this year, so that's a great finish for us. I think we're going to see a lot of improvement throughout the season," he said.

"Some of our younger kids got their first wins. It was just a good overall performance by the entire team.

"It was a fun weekend, good start to the season," he added.
