Karl Hellwig didn't figure in Glacier's scoring, but he had perhaps the biggest play of the game.

Hellwig rebounded a missed C.M. Russell shot with 1.4 seconds remaining, helping the Wolfpack escape with a 47-45 nonconference basketball victory at home Friday night in the season opener for both schools.

Glacier outscored CMR in the fourth quarter 18-12.

"We applied some pressure with our guards and forced some turnovers (down the stretch)," Glacier coach Mark Harkins said.

"We got some breaks off turnovers."

Glacier shot 20-for-53 from the field and was a miserable 5-for-17 from the free throw line. CMR outrebounded Glacier 40-27.

"First time Glacier has beaten CMR," Harkins said. "It's nice to get that monkey off our back.

"It was ugly," he added, "but we'll take it. The kids battled hard."

Glacier was led offensively by Kyle Griffith, 15 points, and Logan Iverson, 10. Ryan Edwards had nine rebounds to go with eight points.

Russ Morin had 14 points and 10 rebounds for CMR.

Glacier is back on the court Friday at Whitefish.
