Johnson lifts Libby girls over Troy

LIBBY - Jenny Johnson scored six of her game-high 12 points in the third period as Libby rolled by Troy 34-14 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Tuesday.

Libby (1-4) blew the game open in the third period, outscoring the Trojans 13-2 for a 26-8 lead.

Jordan Williams and Michaela Curry both tallied four points for Troy.

Libby will open the 2012 portion of its schedule on Jan. 6 at Whitefish.

EUREKA - Columbia Falls was simply deadly at the free throw line, sinking 21-of-22 shots in defeating Class B Eureka.

Class A Columbia Falls made 16 straight heading into the final period.

"They killed us from the free throw line," Eureka coach R.J. McDole said.

"That hurt."

Hope Burlage, who was 11-of-12 from the charity stripe, finished with 17 points. Madison Sanderfer had game-high honors with 19.

Eureka was led by Cassidy Morgan, who had 12 points to go with nine rebounds.

"The first half was absolutely terrible," McDole said.

"Third quarter, they came out fired up, got us back into it."

Eureka, down 30-16 at the half, closed to within three points in the third quarter.

"Good second-half effort," McDole said.

Both teams scored 27 points in the final half.

Eureka (0-4) plays a District 7B game Thursday at Plains.

Columbia Falls (1-4) resumes play Jan. 5 at Class B Bigfork.

LIBBY - Cory Orr scored 26 points to help Class B Troy double the score on Class A Libby.

Libby was held to 10 second-half points.

Jared Winslow and Nolan Broden had five points each to lead the Loggers.

Libby is back on the court Jan. 6 hosting Whitefish.

Columbia Falls 90, Eureka 53

EUREKA - Austin Barth scored 20 points and four others hit double figure scoring in Columbia Falls' victory over Class B Eureka.

Barth scored 10 points in the opening quarter as the Wildcats ran off to a 24-7 lead.

"They got out running on us," Eureka coach Chad Dunn said.

"Layup after layup after layup. We didn't get back on defense."

Eureka did a better job in the second quarter and outscored the Wildcats 19-17 to trail 41-26.

"We got back on defense a little better, ran ourselves a little bit," Dunn said.

"We moved the ball up the court. That's why we were able to keep up with them a little better."

Class A Columbia Falls came out in the third quarter and tallied 30 points.

Parker Johnson finished with 14 points for Columbia Falls, Ronny Gallegos netted 12, Anthony Correa had 11 and Alex Presnell 10.

Tanner Peterson had 15 points for Eureka, nine coming in the second quarter.

Eureka (1-3, 0-1) hosts Plains on Thursday for a District 7B contest.

Columbia Falls (3-2) entertains Class B Bigfork on Jan. 5.
