Whitefish defeats Flathead for second straight year in boys basketball

WHITEFISH - Whitefish, for the second straight year, has defeated Flathead.

This time, it wasn't even close.

Whitefish (2-2) used a soft, full-court man into a 2-3 zone in the first half to hold Flathead to just 11 points en route to a 70-49 nonconference boys basketball victory.

Flathead (3-1) was held to two points in the second quarter as Whitefish was up 28 points at the half.

Flathead tried to battle back with a 25-point third quarter, but Whitefish outscored the Braves 18-13 in the final frame.

Whitefish defeated Flathead last year on a last-second shot by Cooper Olson from 24 feet.

Olson hit four treys in this meeting to share game-high scoring honors with teammate Gage Vasquez. Both had 19 points.

Jake Slaybaugh scored 12 and Chris Forrest 10.

George Sherwood was the lone Brave to finish in double-digit scoring. He had 11 points.

Flathead will look to bounce back on Thursday with a nonconference game at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Whitefish wraps up the pre-holiday portion of its schedule at home Thursday with Class B Bigfork.

WHITEFISH - Flathead pulled away from Whitefish after a slow-first quarter for a nonconference victory over Class A Whitefish.

Flathead (3-1) outscored Whitefish (0-4) 13-6 in the second period to lead 21-7, and 16-5 in the third period for a 37-12 edge going into the fourth quarter.

Jenessa Heine, 14 points, and Emma Andrews, 10, were Flathead's two offensive leaders.

Ashley Brewer led Whitefish with six.

Flathead has another nonconference outing on Thursday, at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Whitefish entertains Bigfork on Thursday in a nonleague contest.
