Martel wins courthouse contract
Martel Construction was awarded the Flathead County Courthouse reconstruction contract on Tuesday.
The company, which has offices in Bigfork and Bozeman, was the low bidder among five firms for the major renovation of the 108-year-old main courthouse.
It bid $1,940,800 for a project that involves restoring the interior and exterior, and improving accessibility and energy efficiency.
The architect’s estimate for the project was $2,032,900.
Martel has done several major construction jobs in the Flathead Valley, including the Fun Beverage complex, Blue Cow center and Tamarack Brewing Co.
“We’re very happy to have them on board,” County Administrative Officer Mike Pence said.
Martel is known for its “good quality and high craftsmanship,” said Corey Johnson of CTA Architects, the county’s architect and engineering firm for the project.
Martel’s leadership on the project will include vice president Steve Conway, project manager Ryan Dunn and onsite superintendent John Beck.
The courthouse project involves restoring the grand stairway to replicate original construction and preserving the exterior facade, which includes replacing damaged trim and installing rain gutters and new windows.
The building will be brought up to Americans with Disabilities Act standards by adding an elevator and handicapped-accessible restrooms on each floor.
Construction will begin this month. Courthouse employees have been temporarily relocated to the Earl Bennett Building at 1035 First Ave. W.
