Contest begins for young writers
Young writers may submit their short stories or poems to Authors of the Flathead’s annual High School Student Writing Contest.
The annual competition, hosted by the local writers group, is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students may enter in the short story or poetry categories for a chance to win a cash prize.
In the short story competition, first prize is $300, second prize is $200 and the third-place story nets $100.
In poetry, first prize is $125, second place is $75 and the third-place poem wins $50.
Entries must be voluntary; teachers may not use the contest as a class assignment. Students may enter once in each category.
Short stories may not exceed 900 words. Poems must not be longer than 35 lines.
Entries will be judged on theme, creativity, artistic merit, clarity, spelling and grammar. Members of Authors of the Flathead will judge the entries.
