Five alpine ski racers with the Whitefish Mountain team recently competed in this year’s only Super G race series for young Montana racers Feb. 11-13 at Showdown Ski Area southeast of Great Falls.

This special series drew more than 125 racers, ages 6-13, from throughout Montana to compete in the Northern Division of the Youth Ski League.

The Super G is the fastest race for the youths, with skiers reaching speeds of more than 50 mph.

To be 9 years old and go 47 mph on skis is really “fun, surprising and windy,” said Colter Upton of Whitefish.

Top results from the first day included a first-place finish for Addie Elm, second place for Upton and fifth place for Jacques Eve in their respective age divisions.

The second day yielded similar results from Elm (first), Upton (second) and Jacques Eve (seventh).

All the youths improved their skiing each day, coach Roy Loman said.

Sunday’s final results yielded a first-place finish for Upton in the J6 division, second place for Elm in J3 girls and sixth for Eve in J4 boys. Piper Howeth finished 13th in J4 girls.

Cameron Welch went all-out but crashed in J4 boys competition.
