Two Griz, one Bobcat named FCS All-Americans

Two University of Montana football players and one Montana State player have been named pre-season Football Championship Subdivision All-Americans.

Montana cornerback Trumaine Johnson was selected to the first team defense while linebacker Caleb McSurdy made the second team.

Griz senior offensive tackle Charles Burton received honorable mention status.

Bobcat kicker Jason Cunningham was a second team selection.

The squads were announced by Consensus Draft Services Monday.

Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 197-pound senior from Stockton, Calif.,was tabbed a first team All-American by every entity last season, including American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, The Sports Network, Phil Steele, and Walter Camp.

Johnson, was also a first team All-Big Sky Conference pick in 2010. He was ninth on the team in tackles with 44 stops, and second with four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.

 McSurdy, a 6-0, 242-pound senior from Boise, Idaho, started all 11 games for the Griz a year ago, and had a team-high 112 tackles. He was fourth on the team with 7.5 tackles for loss. He was a second team All-Big Sky selection. 

Burton, who weighs in at 315 pounds, will be starting at offensive right tackle for the second straight season in 2011. The senior from, Long Beach, Calif., was an honorable mention All-Big Sky selection last year.

Also making the first team was Bo Levi Mitchell, the 6-foot-1 quarterback who led the Eastern Washington University Eagles to a national championship in January. EWU defensive tackle Renard Williams was named to the first team defense.

Other Big Sky selections included Idaho State punter David Harrington, punt returner Tavoy Moore and linebacker A.J. Storm, all of whom were named to the first team defense. Sacramento State defensive end Zack Nash also made first team defense while his teammate running back Bryan Hilliard was selected to the second team offense.
