Pedestrian tunnel welcome

Pedestrian traffic will be getting a subterranean boost this year with a new tunnel under U.S. 93.

Starting in mid-May, construction work should begin to install a pedestrian tunnel connecting the Flathead Valley Community College and the Kidsports complex.

The 140-foot tunnel near the intersection of Grandview Drive and Four Mile Drive will be a critical link for trails and bike paths on the east and west sides of the busy highway.

And the tunnel also promises to be a big help during major sporting events at Kidsports, with people able to park at the college and walk through the tunnel to the athletic fields (which don’t have nearly enough parking when dozens of teams and hundreds of players and parents descend on Kidsports).

The tunnel, which the highway department says will be built as swiftly as possible to minimize highway traffic problems, will make a commendable transportation link for Kalispell.

America lost another of its classic movie stars this week with the passing of film goddess Elizabeth Taylor. But lucky for us, she’ll be forever young in her many movies now destined to be replayed on those cable channels that feature classic movies.

Taylor was unforgettable in so many ways, from her striking violet eyes and drop-dead good lucks as a young starlet to her multiple and sometimes scandalous marriages. In later years she survived all kinds of major operations and health problems, including a brain tumor in 1997.

Taylor also was a champion for a number of charitable causes, most notably the fight against AIDS.

There was much about the screen siren that was always over the top and even zany at times. It seemed her glamour never faded, though, and she kept her indomitable spirit to the end.

Graffiti, including those old cave drawings, are probably the first examples of what is now known as social media. Newspapers are probably the most successful, providing the glue that keeps communities together for many years.

But these days when you talk about social media, you are talking about the Internet, and particular websites such as Facebook and Twitter that allow interaction between friends and strangers for the purpose of sharing information, feelings and photos — lots of photos!

Well, the Inter Lake has had a newspaper for 122 years, a website for well over a decade, and Facebook and Twitter accounts for several years, but up till now we have struggled with how best to marry the new and old platforms.

Starting last week, however, we announced that the Inter Lake’s presence on Facebook and Twitter would be growing. And we are pleased to report that our readership on these two websites has also been growing.
