The victim of a fatal Monday morning crash near Lakeside has been identified as a 29-year-old Missoula resident, according to the Flathead County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.

Tanner Kahler was killed in a one-vehicle crash on U.S. 93 at about 4:30 a.m. when he apparently overcorrected his steering, slid across the slick roadway, overturned and collided with a rock embankment, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

Emergency responders used the Jaws of Life to extract his body from the small pickup truck and he was pronounced dead at the scene about three miles south of Lakeside.

Kahler graduated from Loyola Scared Heart High School in Missoula in 2000, earning multiple all-state honors in football and basketball. He played baseball for the Missoula Mavericks and for Washington State University, according to The Associated Press.

Lakeside Quick Response, the Somers Fire Department and the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the accident.

Kahler is the fourth person to die on Flathead County roads this year.
