Softball: FHS wins 17-inning thriller with Helena

HELENA - Sidney Alberts' RBI double with two outs in the 17th inning gave Flathead a thrilling 1-0 Western AA softball victory over Helena High on Saturday.

The rally started when Flathead's Shayla Tweet advanced to first on a dropped third strike in the 17th inning with two outs. Julia Morrow then reached on an error. Alberts promptly drilled the game-winning double to score Tweet.

Alberts also went the distance in the circle. She allowed 10 hits.

HHS totaled five doubles and stranded 16 base runners.

Flathead was held to just two hits in its second outing of the day, falling to Helena Capital 9-0.

Wolfpack split road games

HELENA - Glacier's Kendra Bouley threw out the tying run at the plate to end the game on Saturday as the Wolfpack downed host Helena High 2-1.

The win earned a split on the day for the Wolfpack, which fell 5-4 to Helena Capital.

Glacier scored two runs in the first inning against the Bengals. Helena scored in the fifth, then had two outs and a runner on second base in the seventh.

A Bengal batter hit a deep grounder between second and third. Glacier shortstop Paige Latimer made the stop but her throw to first wasn't in time. However, first baseman Bouley made the scoop - and when the Helena coach sent the runner from third, she threw her out.

"It was amazing. It was a great way to win," said Glacier coach Joel Bemis.

"The girls were pretty excited. It was a good team win and they all contributed," he said.

Wolfpack pitchers Jessie Compton and Bouley combined to scatter nine hits.

Glacier was led at the plate by sophomore Jena Willis, 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Baylee Quay hit a 2-run home run and Megan Connolly hit a solo homer in the first game against Helena Capital.

Capital scored two unearned runs on two Glacier errors in that one.

"We played solid. Last time they beat us 18-9, so we competed with them. We hung in there and made a game out of it," Bemis said.

The Wolfpack (6-9, 5-6) plays host at 5 p.m. Tuesday to Polson. That will be senior night for Glacier.
