George Sherwood, a 6-foot-4, 201-pound junior wide receiver at Flathead High School, has passed the initial evaluation period for participation in the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl football game.

Sherwood has been recognized as one of the nation's top 400 high school football players. During the 2011 fall football season, the final roster of 90 players will be announced.

The bowl's selection committee consists of Rivals.com, Tom Lemming and All American Games.

The 2012 U.S. Army All-American bowl will be played in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on Jan. 7.

The game will be televised live on NBC.

Last year a record crowd of 37,893 watched the game.

Sherwood earned first team Class AA All-state and Western AA all-conference honors last season.

"It's a pretty cool deal," Flathead High School activities director Frank Jobe said.

"It would be great if he would actually get a chance to play in it. He's pretty excited."

Jobe said two local Army recruiters came to the school to talk with Sherwood and his parents about the process of being selected and the game itself.

"They visited with him, went on line to register him and did all they needed to do to make it happen," Jobe said.

Sherwood, a two-year starter for the Braves, set a school record last season with 15 touchdown receptions.

He also led the Braves in catches.

"It's exciting for him, his family and for the Braves football program," FHS football coach Russell McCarvel said.

"Out of all the high schools in the nation, we have one of the 400 nominated for that game. It's a pretty big deal for sure."

McCarvel says Sherwood is explosive off the line, is a long strider, which gets him down field quickly, and has a great pair of hands.

"He will attract a lot of attention (next season) and this will help attract even more," McCarvel said.

"He will have to continue to work in the classroom, in the weight room and we're expecting him to be a great leader for us. He's very coachable; you tell him what needs to be done and he will do it."
