Nate Thompson of Columbia Falls competes in the long jump on Saturday at the Archie Roe Track and Field Invitational in Kalispell.

One was a senior in his final Archie Roe Invitational track meet. Another was a freshman in her first.

Both are leading strong in this final stretch of the season.

Glacier senior Jacob Leininger and Whitefish freshman Marlow Schulz guided their respective teams to first-place finishes at the 37th annual Archie Roe Invitational at Legends Stadium on a Saturday stricken with familiar bipolar weather.

Glacier flexed its muscles with only three weeks remaining until state, tallying 134 points behind victories from Leininger, Tanner Morrison (discus), Todd Ogden (javelin) and the short relay team. The relay of Leininger, Kyle Griffith, Andrew Nelson and Aaron Mitchell won with a personal-best time of 44.38.

The Flathead boys were second on the day with 76.5 points and Columbia Falls was third, 74.

Browning's Charles Old Chief swept the short distance races and was named the top male athlete of the meet.

Leininger returned to form in the hurdle races with a sweep after battling illness in recent weeks. In fact, in four years of high school, the three-sport athlete has been facing one hurdle after another, from season-ending injury early last season to bumps, bruises and broken bones occuring all four years.

The cold, rainy weather that has been on display all spring isn't dampening Leininger's spirits. Not after everything he's already overcome.

"It feels great (to be competing)," said Leininger, one of the state's leading hurdlers. "Missing all of last year, I just wanted to come out as strong as I could this year. I had a pretty good offseason doing basketball and football and I felt really good coming in. I worked with coach (Jim) Kola all summer long. It feels awesome to be able to lead the way now."

On the girls side, Schulz tallied 30 of Whitefish's 99 points. Teammate Jessica Sagen won the 1,600.

Flathead was second overall with 92 points and Glacier was third, 86.

Schulz grew up watching the massive engagement that is Archie Roe. Her father, Derek, is the track coach at Whitefish, and as a result young Marlow has spent her fair share of time on the track.

It shows.

The speedy freshman won the 100 (12.9), 200 (26.23) and 400 (58.70) in impressive fashion, earning the title of top female athlete for the day.

"It's really surreal," said Schulz, one of the best sprinters in the state. "I grew up watching this meet and it's just so amazing to be a part of it."

Although sour weather hung over most of the day's events until near the end, the meet was not without bright spots.

Columbia Falls' Derrick Williams ran the second

fastest time in the 800 this season, clocking 1:58.80 in winning fashion. Teammate Justin Whitman was runner-up with 1:59.30. Columbia Falls won the long relay with 3:32.93.

Flathead's Kwyn Johnson won the girls triple jump with the third best mark in the state, 36-2 1/2.

Flathead's Zach Perrin won both the 1,600 and 3,200.

Plains' Tyler Firestone won both the long and triple jump. Drew Galbraith of Whitefish was tops in the high jump. Ryan Hover of Missoula Hellgate won the pole vault and teammate Jesse Ginn won the shot put.

Glacier's Lexy Boschee won the 100 hurdles and high jump and teammate Heather Fraley was first in the 800.

Flathead's Tess Brenneman won the long jump and ran on the winning short relay team with Chelsea Shuman, Jaclyn Rauthe and Dani Davis.

Bigfork's Mallery Knoll won the 300 hurdles. Loyola Sacred Heart's Kiernan Haggarty won the javelin and Ashley Medeiros won shot put. Taylor Allen of Hellgate was tops in the pole vault.

"Archie Roe is a great showcase of the talent that we have here in the Northwestern part of the state. You know at Archie you're going to get the best from everybody here," Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said. "Our kids know that coming down we have Archie, divisionals and state. It's time to fine tune things, make our final adjustments and put our run together."
