Missoula Sentinel and Glacier opened the Western AA boys soccer season with a tie Thursday afternoon at Glacier High School.

All four goals came in the first half by four different players.

Sentinel scored first, four minutes into play, on a goal by Joshua Espinosa.

Glacier answered with Tanner Maroney finding the net off an assist by Josiah Bumgarner.

Sentinel took the lead again on Nick Propt's goal, and Glacier answered a final time on a shot by Matt Peters off an assist by Jake Lockwood.

"The guys showed a lot of heart coming back from a goal down each time," Glacier coach Ryan O'Rourke said.

"That was encouraging."

Both teams had their scoring chances in the final half, but failed to cash in.

"It was a hard-fought matchup on both sides of the ball," O'Rourke said.

"A good first game to see.

"Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the results," he added.

"I think our team can get better. It was the first game for both teams and game fitness has a long way to go."

Missoula Sentinel struck early, scoring twice in the first four minutes of play, and rolled from there for an easy Western AA girls soccer victory.

Trae Rocheleau scored just two minutes into play and Molly Smith scored two minutes later.

Rocheleau added another goal at 43 minutes and five different Spartans scored in the season opener.

Kendall Halliburton accounted for Glacier's goal in the 33rd minute.

"We started basically one returning starter on our defense and a new keeper," Glacier coach Paul Holmgren said.

"It was a big adjustment."

Glacier's lone defensive starter - Sara Burch - left the match after 10 minutes with an injury.

"Sentinel is probably the No. 1 team in the west and it showed," Holmgren said. "They are very experienced."

Holmgren was pleased with Glacier's midfield play.

"They were very strong, probably as strong as we've ever been," he said.

"Chantel Gustine and Abretia Crandell, our two captains, did an awesome job of running the team in the center."
