C-Falls, Polson, Whitefish win Class A football openers

COLUMBIA FALLS - Brendan Windauer scored on a 4-yard run with just over four minutes to play, giving Columbia Falls a 14-6 season-opening Class A football victory Friday night over Corvallis.

Parker Johnson had a big night for Columbia Falls. He finished with eight receptions for 95 yards and one touchdown. He also had an interception.

Columbia Falls quarterback Austin Barth was 12 of 20 passing for 145 yards. He hit Johnson on a 9-yard strike for the score.

Dan Jones rushed 22 times for 90 yards to key the Wildcat ground game.

Colin King also had a interception for Columbia Falls.

"Outstanding defensive game," Columbia Falls coach Bill Coleman said.

"We held them to 77 yards rushing, 217 yards total offense.

"I'm very pleased with the way we played on defense," he added.

"These guys were big and physical. They tried to run it on us and they couldn't. I'm very happy with our defensive front."

WHITEFISH - Shane Marcial scored two touchdowns and Chris Forrest ran for another as Whitefish edged Hamilton in the nonconference Class A opener for both teams.

Marcial, 17 rushes for 91 yards, ran 5 yards for one score and hauled in a 29-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chris Forrest.

Forrest was 7 of 17 passing for 103 yards. He did throw one interception. He also rushed 16 times for 142 yards.

Forrest intercepted a Hamilton pass in the end zone with 2:30 to play to stall a Bronc scoring drive.

Whitefish's Connor Donahue was 4 of 9 passing for 65 yards. He had one interception.

"A great effort by us," Whitefish coach Chad Ross said.

"We're learning how to win. It's fun to win a game."

Whitefish had just one victory last year.

BELGRADE - Senior quarterback Vince DiGiallonardo ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as the Polson Pirates steamrolled Belgrade in Class A nonconference play.

Paul McClurg also scored twice for the Pirates (1-0) on runs of three and one yard.

Polson had 343 yards in total offense to 78 for Belgrade.

Polson rushed for 287 yards on 46 carries and added 56 yards in the air.

CUT BANK - Ryan Holder threw three touchdown passes, all to Bryton Guckenberg, as Eureka posted a Class B seaon-opening victory over Cut Bank.

Holder's scoring strikes to Guckenberg covered 22, 40 and 35 yards.

Scoring for Bigfork were Chris Landon on a 25-yard pass from Colter Mahlum and Cody Dopps on a 1-yard run.
