Public cautioned about thefts from autos

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office warns people of a rash of thefts from vehicles.

Thefts have occurred in parking lots, on public property and on private property, even with people nearby, Sheriff Chuck Curry says, from both locked and unlocked vehicles.

Among the items reported stolen from vehicles Monday were binoculars, a .357-caliber Colt King Cobra, a GPS system, wallets, a laptop, clothing and a radar detector.

People are advised to not leave valuables inside their vehicles and to keep their vehicles locked. Anyone with information about recent thefts from vehicles is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 758-5585 or Crimestoppers at 752-8477.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance on Slow Down Lane in Bigfork, where a person reported a man showed up, swinging a club, at his girlfriend’s apartment. The person said the man was using the club to bang on the windows after threatening his girlfriend the previous day, saying he was going to rip the apartment apart. He then backed through the caller’s fence and left. The man was later apprehended and taken to jail.

Several vehicles were ransacked along Echo Lake Road in Bigfork early Tuesday morning. A man who called the police said at one point he saw a man with a flashlight running and later heard water splashing. It was believed that the suspect may have jumped into Echo Lake.

The Kalispell Police Department received a report of criminal mischief after a person reported someone might have loosened the lug nuts on one of his tires while his vehicle was parked at a store on U.S. 93 Monday. The person said when they pulled away they had to stop within less than a mile because the tire in question was nearly falling off.

A set of subwoofer speakers were reported stolen from a vehicle on U.S. 2 West.

An iPod and CD deck were reported stolen from a vehicle on Second Avenue West.

Officers with the Columbia Falls Police Department counseled three men after it was reported that they kept mooning the waitress of a restaurant behind a Ninth Street West home Friday.

A woman and two men fled an apartment building on Martha Road as an officer pulled up after it was reported that they were attempting to break into one of the units using a credit card.

A Council Bluffs Drive resident reported a man in a red truck tried to get his 10-year-old daughter to get in the vehicle with him while at a nearby park last Friday.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies made a DUI arrest on Terrace Lake Road Sunday.

An incident of criminal mischief was logged after officers responded to a report of vandalism on Cherry Hill Court Monday.

A theft from a vehicle on Orchard Park Lane on Monday was reported.
