MISSOULA — Bigfork’s Makena Morley won the girls

division of the Mountain West Classic at the University of Montana

Golf Course Saturday with a time of 17:10.4.

Glacier runner Troy Fraley came in second behind

Andrew Gardner of Mead with a finishing time of 15:01.5 on the boys

side.

For Columbia Falls, Derrick Williams finished fifth

at 15:15.6 and set a school cross country record in the

process.

“Derrick had a great race,” Columbia Falls coach

Richard Menicke said. “(He had a) really outstanding third mile to

move from 10th to fifth place.”

The previous school record was 15:39, set by Rob

Macal in 1983.

Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said Morley ran “smooth

and effortlessly.”

“She didn’t let anyone dictate how she races,”

Loeffler said.

As for Fraley, Glacier coach Mike McLean said it was

the junior’s best showing at Mountain West.

“He took care of business today,” McLean said. “He’s

training hard. He’s a great leader for our team.”

Flathead’s Zach Perrin was notably absent from the

list of runners at the Mountain West Classic.

Braves’ coach Paul Jorgensen said Perrin is nursing a

sprained ankle and could potentially return next week.

The top finisher for Flathead was Hunter Schutt, who

finished 47th with a time of 16.19.2.

“Most of our kids improved considerably, so that was

a bright spot,” Jorgensen said. “On both the boys and girls side

actually.”
