by The Daily Inter Lake
| September 24, 2011 10:25 PM

The Flathead Bravettes scored twice after throw-ins

by Joey Thiel and topped Missoula Big Sky 2-0 Saturday in a Western

AA girls soccer matchup at Kidsports Complex.

Paige Birkey struck first, scoring in the 39th minute

with an assist from Thiel. Flathead went ahead by two goals when

Bailie Poe found the net in the 48th minute after a throw-in and

then a quick pass by Jacquelyn Merrill.

“Anytime we can get a win it’s great, but the kids

actually had a great week of practice, came out and worked really

hard today,” Flathead coach Scott Warnell said. “They really

controlled the game by passing and moving the ball all the way up

the field.”

Payton Pietron turned away four shots on goal for the

Bravettes.

“Marti Penrod also played really solid in the middle

for us,” Warnell said. “All four of our defenders stepped up

again.”

As for the success following throw-ins, Warnell said

his team has been working to master them.

“We’ve been working on those,” he said. “Joey has a

long throw-in for us. So we’re working on getting kids in the

box.”
