Porch, Glacier boys 2nd at AA state golf
BUTTE - It was second again for Ryan Porch and the Glacier boys golf squad regarding state tournament play.
Porch capped off another great fall campaign with his second-straight runner-up finish in medalist play, along with helping the Wolfpack pick up its third second-place trophies in five years.
Porch, six shots behind Brandon McIver of Billings West last year at state, this time was just one shot off the pace. Porch shot 73-70-143.
Porch's 70 was the low round for the final day.
McIver, on the other hand, turned in a 70-72-142 to retain his title.
"He had it going pretty good," Glacier coach Rob Logsdon said of Porch on the final day, "but had three holes on the front nine where he staggered a little bit. He couldn't make it up on the last nine."
Still, it was a great way for Porch to finish.
"He played well," Logsdon said.
"Logan Iverson had a good day, shot 71. He was 1-under for awhile, but had a couple bogeys on the back nine. I'm really proud of those guys."
Iverson shot 76 on Thursday for a 147 total, which tied him for fifth place. He was five shots behind McIver.
The top 15 individuals earn all-state honors.
Logsdon was also happy for senior Andy Boyer, 75-79-154.
"He's been on four teams now that have finished in the top three at state," Logsdon said.
"We're happy to send him off with another trophy."
Billings West topped the field with a 590 score. Billings Senior was third, 603.
Glacier shot 559.
In addition to the Wolfpack's runner-up finishes, it has finished first and third the other years at state.
The Glacier girls, who struggled on the first day of play, bounced back nicely. The Wolfpack shot 341 for the final 18, which was the second-lowest team score on Friday.
The girls finished fifth with a 704 two-day total.
"They just dug themselves too deep of a hole the first day," Logsdon said.
"They had lots to be proud of today. That 341 is the lowest team score ever for us."
Bozeman, 657, took the team title with Butte, 679, second and Billings West, 680, third.
Hannah Davis, 92-82-174, tied for 15th place to lead the Wolfpack. She was the lone Wolfpack girl to earn all-state honors.
Shelby Ballard and Mallory Skinn, both seniors, finished their careers with mixed results. Ballard had her best round on the final day, shooting 90-85-175. She missed all-state honors by a stroke.
Skinn had her best round on Thursday, which was good for 10th place. She shot 88-95-183.
Logsdon said both seniors made great contributions to the program this year, and in past years.
Kortney McNeil of Billings Senior, 78-74-152, was the medalist for girls.
Flathead's boys finished 13th, 665. The Braves were led by Michael Lavin, 85-77-162, Cole Bauer, 83-80-163, and Max Applegate, 79-85-164.
Flathead's girls also wound up 13th, 820. Geneva Zoltek, 101-94-195, had the best showing for the Bravettes. Jourdan McFarland, 101-99-200, was next.
