The KATS swim team had five individuals win titles at the Montana Long Course State Championship July 27-29 in Bozeman.

James Bouda, competing in the 11-12 age bracket, led the way with five event-winning times — 50 backstroke (34.23), 50 freestyle (30.38), 100 butterfly (1:17.09), 50 butterfly (32.16) and 100 backstroke (1:15.33).

Antoinette Popp, 10-and-under, was a four-time winner — 200 individual medley (3:08.00), 400 freestyle (5:55.66), 50 butterfly (36.89) and 100 freestyle (1:15.57).

Lily Milner, 8-and-under, took firsts in the 100 freestyle (1:36.57), 50 breaststroke (59.52) and 50 freestyle (41.61) while Maxine Scroggs, 17-21, was a triple winner with meet-best times in the 50 backstroke (33.55), 200 backstroke (2:40.23) and 100 backstroke (1:12.11).

Miranda Lind, 13-14, won the 1,500 freestyle (21:03.46).

“Overall, we did really, really well,” KATS coach Brandon Rannebarger said.

“They all have something in common — they practice a lot and work really hard. It’s not a shock they are winning.

“With Miranda, it was awesome to watch (her in the 1,500 freestyle). She got outside her comfort zone in that race. This time she led the pack, pulled out and swam her own race. She risked her energy and got first.”

Rannebarger said Popp won the 200 IM with a great finish.

“It was down to the wire,” he said. “She put her head down at the end and just touched a girl out. It shows the skills they are getting in their workouts show at meet time.”
