Local schools kick off soccer season

MISSOULA — The Glacier girls soccer team conceded a pair of second-half goals in a 2-0 loss at Missoula Sentinel in their season opener Tuesday.

After a goal-less first half, Sentinel opened the scoring three minutes into the second when Elly Jones scored on an assist from Jessica Bixby. Sentinel doubled its advantage in the 76th minute when Lexi Steele scored on an assist from Taylor Peterson.

Sentinel finished with an 18-9 edge in shots.

Libby 2, Stevensville 2

Libby’s girls soccer team opened its season with a draw at Stevensville Tuesday.

Libby led 2-0 in the second half but couldn’t hang on as Stevensville scored in the 64th and 66th minutes to force a tie.

Elly Webster scored Libby’s first goal in the 26th minute on an assist from Shea Munro. Holly Leggins netted Libby’s second goal in the 43rd minute on an assist from Callan Peel.

Sarah Howell scored a hat trick to lead Polson to a win over Bigfork in the season-opener for both teams.

Howell scored her first goal at the seven-minute mark on an assist from Linnea Madsen. Madsen and Howell combined again in the 50th minute to put Polson ahead 2-0 early in the second half.

Howell added her third goal in the 75th minute.

“Both teams had great chances, but Sarah Howell and Linnea Madsen were definitely the difference in what seemed a much closer game than the final score,” Bigfork head coach Charlie Appleby wrote in an e-mail.

Colton Becker scored in the 60th minute to lift Glacier to a win over Missoula Sentinel in their first game of the season.

Glacier head coach Ryan O’Rourke said he was pleased with the performance of his young team, which fielded two freshman starters. “(We had) quite a few shots on target,” he said. “From our perspective, it was a good team performance all around the board. Always nice to start with a win.”

Libby 4, Stevensville 2

Libby scored four unanswered goals to close out a win over Stevensville in their season-opener Tuesday.

Stevensville opened the scoring with a fifth-minute goal by Daniel Pendergast, then took a 2-0 lead when Sam Giese converted from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute.

Libby’s Jason Schnackenberg scored twice on set pieces to even the score before half time.

Johnny Davidson gave Libby its first lead a minute into the second half, scoring on an assist from Justice Goldstone.

Goldstone picked up a second assist in the 78th minute, feeding Schnackenberg for his third goal of the game.

Bigfork 6, Polson 3

Austin Gordon scored four second-half goals to help Bigfork come from behind against Polson Tuesday.

Bigfork trailed 3-2 at the half when Bigfork coach Keith Koslosky moved Gordon from defense to the front line.

“He’s turned himself into a very strong forward,” Koslosky said. “I asked him to play in the back for this team and he has done it. I moved him up front in the second half and he did what he does best.”

The game opened with a bang as both teams scored twice in the first 10 minutes. Tyler Zavala got both goals for Bigfork while James Larson and Alex Helgeson each found the back of the net for Polson.

Sam Heutmaker broke the tie in the 21st minute to give Polson a lead before the end of the half.
